‘There is nothing permanent except change’ – Heraclitus
Here at The Liberty Lounge, we’ve been reflecting on the last few months and what an incredible impact they’ve had. There’s been some serious up and down’s and we’ve seen and felt sadness both personally and professionally. You see although we’re in the business of sharing people’s pain and take comfort in being there to guide you to more creative, resilient versions of yourselves, it’s safe to say that we’ve been thrown, dusted ourselves off and were thrown some more.
We did, of course, find pockets of joy wherever we could; spending more time with our families, reflecting on who we are, working out our limits, finding joy in nature and seeing all the great stuff we had to be grateful for (that was totally there all along but we were just too busy to notice) But while we could write a short novel on the joys of birdsong or the beauty in nature we wanted to think about why we struggled in the ways we did, and also how any future changes will affect us.
If you’re anything like us, maybe you’ve even got into a weird kind of groove across lockdown. The thought of changing back to our old lives and the unfamiliar bridge we have to cross to get to there might even bring on a small sense of panic. What if we have to give up all the new habits and routines we’ve grown to love? How did we even manage to fit in all the stuff we used to do? What if we can’t return to places we used to go to escape and unwind? What if we don’t want to go back to our old lives and old selves? There are so many questions and uncertainties about the future, but one that’s set to happen is change.
‘Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.’
Rumi
Changes can be so tricky to navigate, author, speaker and life coach Antony Robbins says that although each person is unique, and we are shaped by our own individual life events, we share the same behavioural systems. He says we have 6 human needs that essentially affect the way we make choices. One of those is certainty and at our core, certainty is a survival mechanism. We take great comfort in life staying the same and this is why many of us were so unsettled at the start. Now because this new world has lasted way longer than we hoped, we’ve all had the opportunity to develop new habits, ones it’s going to take some work to undo. Antony goes on to say that the more uncertainty we can deal with the richer our lives will be, and this is something we’re really going to embrace. Also…how wise is Antony.

We’re going to go into this next chapter in a more prepared way then we entered the last. We know that appreciating all the good stuff and staying grateful is a must, we also know the bits about ourselves and our new routines or behaviours that we want to keep. What we must not lose focus on is our ability to be able to accept change and all the uncertainty that lies ahead. We have no control over what happens next, but we always have control over how we let it affect us.
Like our pal Tony, we believe the secret of living is giving and that’s why we’re always here to listen and support you through ANY changes.
